Information Covid 19 Remote Teaching

15th March 2020

Dear Parent or Guardian,

I would like to share with you the plans that are in place in Gael-Choláiste Chill Dara, as a result of school closures caused by Covid-19. Until further notice, schools are due to reopen on Monday, 30th March.

As you are aware from previous correspondance, the staff of Gael-Choláiste Chill Dara had already been preparing for the possibility of school closures. Students were asked to take their books home in preparation for a school closure. Many school texts are available as e-books or available in pdf form on line. However, if any students still need to access books please contact and we can arrange for collection from the school.

On Thursday 12th March we held a staff meeting after school to discuss and share how we as teachers can best support our students to continue to learn from home using email and google classsrooms. The school is currently investigating and trialing further online classroom platforms for remote teaching which may yet come into effect.

Communication with parents and guardians will be by text, email and through our website and school Twitter account. Please make sure we have your current text number. Contact the office with up to date contact details if you have made changes.

All students and teachers have a school email address. Teachers are using both email and Google Classroom as their main means of communication with pupils. Please take the time to sit with your son or daughter to ensure that they can login to their student email and Google Classroom accounts before Wednesday. You can email if you require further assistance with this. Please continue to watch our website and social media accounts for regular updates.

Although, many teachers have already begun assigning work to students via email and google classroom since Friday, we expect all academic subjects to be fully operational in accordance with the timetable by Wednesday 18th March. Teachers will give specific instructions to students regarding completing and returning any work assignments. We ask all parents and guardians to do their best to ensure that students complete and return their work assignments on time.

Classroom Based Assessments for second and third years should not be carried out at home by students.

Transition Year Work Experience stops for the duration of the school closure.

Oral and Practical Examinations; it is our understanding that the State Exams Commission are putting a contingency plan in place for the Orals and other State Exam related projects. As soon as we receive information on this, we will let you know.

Please continue to check the link below which will bring you to the latest information and advice from the Department of Education and Skills for schools and parents regarding the Corona Virus/ Covid 19.

We continue to follow and for accurate and informative information regarding Covid-19, its symptoms and the steps that the public can take to protect themselves. We would ask parents and guardians to observe all HSE advice regarding social distancing for their children.

I would ask that we keep in our thoughts and prayers those who have been directly affected by the Coronavirus Covid-19 and also our healthcare workers who are managing the illness.

Take care everyone.

Is mise le meas,

Conor Ó Mathúna
